EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the daily life of Egyptian Fellahs women and their child in the early 1910s. The Fellahs, also known as peasants or agricultural laborers, were the backbone of Egypt's rural economy, making up the vast majority of the population. In this image, a woman, dressed in traditional Egyptian clothing, sits with her toddler on a rug in the sandy soil of the Nile Valley. Her husband or one of her co-wives, a common practice in polygamous households, can be seen working in the background, tending to the crops that would sustain their family. The harsh realities of rural life in Egypt during this period are evident in the worn clothing and simple surroundings. Yet, despite the challenges, the resilience and strength of these women are on full display as they carry on with the tasks necessary for their survival. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of Egyptian rural life and the crucial role that Fellahs women played in shaping the agricultural landscape of the region.
