This evocative image captures the dramatic moment from the Old Testament when the prophet Elijah challenges the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:20-40). In this pivotal religious event, Elijah, a devout follower of the God of Israel, sets out to prove once and for all which deity is truly God. The scene depicts the two opposing parties, each preparing their sacrifices on adjacent altars. The priests of Baal, representing the Canaanite god, call upon their deity to ignite their offering. They dance and cry out in frenzied prayer, but to no avail. The altar remains unresponsive, the sacrifice untouched. Meanwhile, Elijah, with unwavering faith, prepares his own sacrifice in quiet confidence. He drenches his altar with water, increasing the odds against him. But as the priests of Baal continue their futile efforts, Elijah prays to God. In a breathtaking display of divine intervention, fire descends from the heavens and consumes Elijah's sacrifice, along with the wood, stones, and even the water in the trench surrounding the altar. The miracle leaves the onlookers, including the Israelites and even some of the priests of Baal, in awe.
