Endell Street Open Air Swimming Pool
A view of the open air swimming pool in Endell Street, Holborn, London, on the site of Holborn Borough Councils Public Swimming bath which was pulled down in 1938 in preparation for the building of a more modern bath. Reconstruction was prevented by the outbreak of war and the cavity of the old Bath became a static water tank to aid fire-fighting during the blitz in London. The wartime decontamination centre, seen behind the pool surmounted by the Boroughs Coat of Arms, provided dressing accommodation for 200 persons an hour. Now part of the Oasis Sports Centre

EDITORS COMMENTS
"Endell Street Open Air Swimming Pool: A Glimpse into London's Swimming History This evocative photograph captures the Endell Street Open Air Swimming Pool in Holborn, London, as it looked in the 1940s. The pool, which once stood on the site of Holborn Borough Council's public swimming bath, was pulled down in 1938 to make way for a more modern bath. However, reconstruction was halted by the outbreak of World War II, and the cavity of the old bath was transformed into a static water tank to aid fire-fighting efforts during the Blitz. The wartime decontamination centre, visible behind the pool and surmounted by the Borough's Coat of Arms, provided dressing accommodation for 200 persons per hour. With the pool out of commission, Londoners continued to find ways to stay active and healthy, turning to other public swimming facilities and outdoor alternatives. The Endell Street Open Air Swimming Pool stands as a testament to London's rich swimming history, a time when public baths and lidos were essential community hubs for exercise, relaxation, and social connection. Today, the site is part of the Oasis Sports Centre, continuing to serve the local community with a range of sports and fitness facilities." This image offers a unique glimpse into London's past, transporting us back to a time when outdoor swimming was a cherished part of daily life, and community spirit thrived in the face of adversity. The Endell Street Open Air Swimming Pool is a reminder of the importance of preserving our historical sites, and the role they play in shaping our collective memory.
