EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning detail from the False Door of Senenmut, an ancient Egyptian architect and official of the 18th Dynasty, showcases the intricately carved Eye of Horus. Senenmut, a trusted advisor and possible lover of Queen Hatshepsut, held significant power during the New Kingdom of Egypt (1550-1077 BC). The False Door, now housed in the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany, was originally placed in Senenmut's grave to serve as a protective barrier between the living world and the afterlife. The Eye of Horus, a powerful symbol of protection and healing, is depicted in various forms throughout Egyptian art. In this instance, it is shown as a stylized representation, with the god Ra's solar disk at its center, surrounded by the hieroglyphs for "utu" (strength) and "edjo" (protection). The Eye is flanked by the cartouches of Senenmut's name, signifying his royal status. The intricate relief carvings on the False Door illustrate various aspects of Egyptian mythology and the deceased's role in the afterlife. The Door's interior is adorned with hieroglyphs and images of gods, including Ptah, Thoth, and Anubis, who would assist Senenmut in his journey to the afterlife. The sandstone False Door of Senenmut is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of ancient Egypt. Its preservation and display in the Neues Museum allows us to appreciate the intricacies of Egyptian art and the fascinating history of its people.
