Fancy dress costumes at the Artists Fancy Dress ball

The Bystander magazine passes comment on the various fancy dress costumes seen at the Artists Fancy Dress ball at the Albert Hall in February 1911. Rather critically, they show three outfits in the top row (Miss D. Barker as Isabel in Measure for Measure, Mr and Mrs Burne as a Franz Hals picture and Mr Carter as a Pharoah) as well conceived. The three in the bottom row (Mr Basil Watt as Walter Raleigh, Lady Constance Stewart-Richardson as a cupid and Captain Jameson as Kaiser Wilhelm II) are not well conceived although frankly, I think the chap as the Kaiser has done a pretty good job. Date: 1913

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Artists Fancy Dress Ball at the Albert Hall in February 1911 was a night of creative expression and elaborate costumes. The Bystander magazine took it upon itself to pass critical comment on some of the most notable outfits of the evening. In the top row, Miss D. Barker's portrayal of Isabel from Measure for Measure was praised for its intricacy and historical accuracy. Mr. and Mrs. Burne's Franz Hals picture was also commended for its authenticity and attention to detail. However, the third outfit in the top row, Mr. Carter as a Pharoah, was equally impressive with its grandeur and regal presence. Moving on to the bottom row, the magazine was less impressed. Mr. Basil Watt's Walter Raleigh costume was criticized for its lack of detail and historical accuracy. Lady Constance Stewart-Richardson's Cupid outfit was described as "unconvincing" and "lacking in the expected ethereal quality." However, the magazine did find some merit in Captain Jameson's portrayal of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Despite some inaccuracies, the magazine acknowledged that the chap had "done a pretty good job" in bringing the controversial German leader to life. Despite the critical comments, the Artists Fancy Dress Ball remained a beloved tradition in the Edwardian era, providing a platform for artists and creatives to showcase their imaginative and often satirical takes on history and current events.
