Born in Graz, Austria, Ferdinand ascended to the throne in 1619 following the death of his elder brother, Matthias. His reign, which lasted from 1619 to 1637, was marked by religious conflict and political instability, most notably the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), a devastating European conflict primarily fought over religious differences between Protestants and Catholics. In this striking oval portrait, Ferdinand is depicted as a serious and resolute young man, wearing the traditional ruff collar and a heavy chain signifying his imperial authority.
