The Barriere Saint-Martin, a toll gate and customs post located on the outskirts of Paris, became a focal point of the revolutionary unrest that swept through France in the summer of 1830. On the evening of July 28, 1830, a large crowd of Parisians, led by the National Guard, gathered at the barriere to demand the abdication of King Charles X. Tensions boiled over as the royal troops stationed at the barriere refused to yield to the crowd's demands. The resulting confrontation quickly escalated into a violent clash, with both sides exchanging gunfire and hurling projectiles. As the fighting intensified, the barriere was set ablaze, marking a turning point in the revolution. The flames illuminated the night sky, casting an ominous glow over the scene as the revolutionaries pressed their attack on the royal troops.
