This evocative portrait captures the distinguished statesman in his prime, exuding an air of authority and intelligence. Born into a noble family, North began his political career under Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth, but his loyalty to the monarchy became evident when he supported the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660. He was rewarded with a baronetcy and later elevated to the peerage as Baron Guilford in 1676. North's political acumen and diplomatic skills were put to the test during the turbulent reigns of Charles II and James II. He served variously as Solicitor General, Attorney General, and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal.
