Francisco J. Hernandez y Martinez (1816-1885): A Pioneering Puerto Rican Physician This engraving, created by A. Carretero in 1872, showcases the distinguished figure of Francisco J. Hernandez y Martinez, a trailblazing Puerto Rican physician of the 19th century. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on July 16, 1816, Hernandez y Martinez dedicated his life to the practice of medicine and became a prominent figure in both Spanish and American medical circles. The image captures Hernandez y Martinez in the prime of his career, with an air of authority and wisdom. His attire, consisting of a formal coat and vest, signifies his professional standing. The colored print adds depth and vibrancy to the image, enhancing the intricacy of Carretero's engraving. Hernandez y Martinez received his medical education in Spain and returned to Puerto Rico to practice medicine. During the Spanish colonial period, he served as the island's chief medical officer and played a significant role in the establishment of the University of Puerto Rico's School of Medicine. Following the U.S. occupation of Puerto Rico in 1898, Hernandez y Martinez continued to practice medicine and was appointed as the first dean of the newly established Medical School at the University of Puerto Rico.
