Guillaume de Rubrouck: The Flemish Franciscan Explorer and His Journey to the Far East This evocative image captures Guillaume de Rubrouck, a Flemish Franciscan friar, as he embarks on his historic journey to the Far East in the late 13th century. Born in Tournai, Belgium, around 1210, Rubrouck was a man of deep spiritual commitment and insatiable curiosity. In 1253, he was granted permission by Pope Innocent IV to lead a mission to the Mongol Empire, aiming to spread the Christian faith and establish diplomatic relations. The photograph, taken from an original illustration in a medieval manuscript, depicts Rubrouck in the garb of a Franciscan friar, clad in a brown robe with a cord and a simple wooden cross. His determined gaze and the map in his hand symbolize his unwavering dedication to his mission and his thirst for geographical knowledge. Rubrouck's account of his travels, known as the "Itinerarium," is a masterpiece of medieval geographical literature, comparable to those of Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta.
