Born in 1537 on the Canary Island of Tenerife, Pedro and his brothers were afflicted with hypertrichosis, a condition characterized by excessive hair growth over the body. Pedro, who gained the nickname 'El Faraón' (The Pharaoh), married a French woman named Françoise de Bertrand, who did not share this condition. Their union resulted in seven children, some of whom inherited their mother's fair complexion and typical features, while others bore the distinctive mark of their father's hairy appearance. This image, believed to have been captured around 1582, offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these unique individuals and the acceptance of diversity in a time when such differences were often met with fear and ostracism. The image showcases the striking contrast between Pedro and Françoise, with their children standing proudly between them.
