EDITORS COMMENTS
In this aerial photograph, the historic Hammersmith Hospital in West London comes into view, with Du Cane Road running alongside. Originally established in 1905 as the Hammersmith Union Workhouse and Infirmary, this institution played a significant role in the social and medical history of the 20th century. The larger part of the site (centre of the picture) was dedicated to the infirmary, where the sick and injured were treated. The workhouse, which housed the poor and destitute, is located at the upper left of the image. The workhouse was separated from the infirmary by the laundry and boiler house. The Hammersmith Workhouse and Infirmary was a product of its time, reflecting the social and economic conditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was designed to provide relief for the poor and the sick, and was a symbol of the welfare state that emerged during this period. The austere architecture of the workhouse, with its long, narrow windows and red-brick facade, stands in stark contrast to the more modern and functional infirmary buildings. The infirmary, with its expansive grounds and well-planned layout, was a testament to the advances in medical care and health services during the early 20th century. Today, Hammersmith Hospital continues to serve the community, providing essential medical and health services to the people of West London. The historic site, with its rich history and architectural significance, remains an important part of the local heritage and a reminder of the social and medical developments of the past century. This photograph, taken from an aerial perspective, offers a unique and fascinating view of this historic site, revealing its layout and architectural features in a way that is not possible from the ground. It is a snapshot of history, capturing the essence of a bygone era and the enduring legacy of Hammersmith Hospital.
