EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a meticulously crafted Iguanodon model from the 1940s, created by renowned British paleontologist Vernon Edward. Based on the Bernissart skeletons discovered in Belgium during the late 1870s, this Iguanodon is depicted in a strictly bipedal, kangaroo-like posture. This reconstruction challenged the prevailing belief that Iguanodon was quadrupedal, as most dinosaur models of the time were portrayed. Iguanodon is an early dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period, belonging to the order Ornithischia and the family Iguanodontidae. This herbivorous dinosaur is characterized by its distinctive crest on its snout, a pair of thumb spikes on its hind limbs, and a long, heavy tail. The Iguanodon is part of the larger group Archosauria, which includes crocodiles and dinosaurs. More specifically, it is classified under Diapsida, Dinosauria, Iguanodont, Iguanodontidae, Diapsid, Ankylopollexia, Archosauromorpha, and Archosauriformes. The Iguanodon's classification as a Euornithopoda, Genasauria, Hadrosauriformes, Iguanodontae, Iguanodontia, and Iguanodontoidea reflects its evolutionary relationships within the dinosaur family tree. The discovery and study of Iguanodon and other dinosaurs have significantly expanded our understanding of the prehistoric world. Vernon Edward's Iguanodon model, with its innovative bipedal representation, contributed to the ongoing dialogue and exploration of dinosaur anatomy and behavior during the mid-20th century.
