This production marked the return of George Alexander and Allan Aynesworth to their original roles as Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing, respectively. The female leads, Stella Patrick Campbell and Rosalie Toller, brought new life to the characters of Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. Despite the advanced age of the leading actors, the production proved to be as popular and entertaining as ever, with audiences flocking to the theatre for eleven consecutive months. The Importance of Being Ernest, first produced at the St. James Theatre on 14th February 1895, had once again become a must-see theatrical event in the early 1900s.
