Fine Art Print : Invention of the Cube Car
Fine Art Prints from Mary Evans Picture Library
Invention of the Cube Car
Invention of the Cube Car. This box-like car, designed by French-Vietnamese designer and engineer Quasar Kahn, was produced in limited numbers between 1967 and 1968 by Universal Power Drives of Perivale, Middlesex, who also made the Unipower sports car. The car had a unique cube-like appearance, with sliding glass doors. It is probably unique amongst car designs in being wider than it is long. The seats were plastic and inflatable. The engine was a four cylinder 1100 cc BMC model with automatic transmission. Modified Mini subframes carried the suspension components and 10-inch Mini wheels were used. Date: 1967

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph captures the unique and visionary design of the Cube Car, a groundbreaking automobile invention by French-Vietnamese designer and engineer Quasar Kahn. Produced in limited numbers between 1967 and 1968 by Universal Power Drives of Perivale, Middlesex, the Cube Car was a box-like vehicle with a distinctive cube-like appearance, wider than it was long. Its sliding glass doors added to its futuristic allure. The Cube Car's seats were made of plastic and inflatable materials, while its engine was a four cylinder 1100 cc BMC model with an automatic transmission. Modified Mini subframes supported the suspension components, and 10-inch Mini wheels were used. The 1960s, a decade known for its innovative spirit, saw the birth of this unusual vehicle. The Cube Car's design was unlike any other car of the era, making it a standout on the roads and at petrol stations. In this photograph, we see a man examining the Cube Car at a BP petrol station, perhaps considering a purchase or simply admiring its unique features. The Cube Car's production run was short-lived, but its impact on automobile design was significant. Its unconventional shape and innovative use of materials paved the way for future automotive inventions. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of Quasar Kahn and the team at Universal Power Drives, who dared to think outside the box when it came to car design.
