EDITORS COMMENTS
"John 'Mad Jack' Fuller's Obelisk, also known as The Brightling Needle, is a striking 105-foot (32 meters) high folly located in the picturesque village of Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England. Built in 1822 by John Fuller, a wealthy local landowner and magistrate, the obelisk was constructed as a tribute to his deceased wife, Anne, and as a navigational aid for travelers passing through the notoriously foggy Sussex countryside. The obelisk, which is made of chalk and flint, was designed to resemble an Egyptian monument and was inspired by the famous Cleopatra's Needle in London. It was erected on a hill overlooking the village and the surrounding countryside, making it a prominent landmark for miles around. The construction of the obelisk was a labor of love for John Fuller, who was known locally as 'Mad Jack' due to his eccentric behavior and extravagant spending. The project reportedly cost him over £2,000, a significant sum at the time. The Brightling Needle quickly became a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from far and wide. In the early 20th century, it was a popular destination for day trips from London, and visitors could even climb to the top of the obelisk for a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Today, The Brightling Needle remains a beloved local landmark and a testament to the eccentricities of John 'Mad Jack' Fuller. It continues to attract visitors from around the world, who come to marvel at this unique and intriguing folly."
