Lady Furness, formerly Ada Daisy Hogg, first wife of Marmaduke Furness, 1st Viscount Furness, pictured in nursing uniform in 1917. She established and equipped a hospital for officers in Harrogate close to their home, Nidd Hall. The hospital had 206 beds and Lady Furness took an active part in its administration. She died in 1921 aboard the Furness boat, Sapphire, and was buried at sea. Date: 1917

This evocative portrait captures Lady Furness, nee Ada Daisy Hogg, in her nursing uniform from 1917. At the time, she was the esteemed wife of Marmaduke Furness, 1st Viscount Furness. Amidst the tumult of World War I, Lady Furness demonstrated remarkable philanthropy and dedication by establishing and equipping a hospital for officers in Harrogate, near their residence, Nidd Hall. The hospital boasted an impressive capacity of 206 beds, and Lady Furness played an active role in its administration. Her commitment to the welfare of wounded soldiers was unwavering, reflecting the indomitable spirit of women from the aristocracy and upper classes during this period. Tragically, Lady Furness passed away in 1921 aboard the Furness boat, Sapphire, and was granted a burial at sea, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and service.
