LCC-LFB - Junior firemen training scheme

The Junior Firemen was created in the latter days of the London County Council. Boys aged 16 to 17 were eligible to join the scheme, and subject to passing the training became firemen on their 18th birthday. Part of their training course was to attend a one month outward bound school in the UK. Here junior firemen have to negotiate the high wall at one of the outward bound schools

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the determination and grit of young firemen-in-training with the London County Council's (LCC) Junior Firemen Scheme in the 1960s. Established towards the end of the LCC era, this program welcomed boys aged 16 to 17 who were eligible to join and, upon successful completion of the training course, became full-fledged firemen upon turning 18. An integral part of their rigorous training regimen was a one-month stay at an outward bound school within the United Kingdom. Here, in this image, we see a group of junior firemen attempting to navigate the high wall, a formidable obstacle designed to test their physical fitness and problem-solving abilities. The outward bound schools provided these young men with valuable skills in teamwork, communication, and resilience, which would serve them well in their future careers as firefighters with the London Fire Brigade. The Junior Firemen Scheme was a testament to the commitment of the London County Council to prepare the next generation of firefighters for the demanding and essential role they would play in protecting their community. The photograph, taken in the late 1960s, encapsulates the spirit of camaraderie, perseverance, and dedication that defined the training experience for these young men.
