LCC-MFB Rushey Green fire station, SE London

Built by the Metropolitan Board of Works (the forerunner of the London County Council), Rushey Green fire station was located at Rushey Green, Catford, SE London. The widespread adoption of motorised fire engines by the LFB led to a reduction in the number of fire stations required and Rushey Green was deemed too small and surplus to requirements. The structure seen on the roof is a row of pulleys and ropes on which hoses would be pulled up to dry after use at fires

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic Rushey Green fire station in Catford, SE London, which was built by the Metropolitan Board of Works (LCC-MFB), the forerunner of the London Fire Brigade (LFB,) in the late 19th century. The fire station, a significant part of London's firefighting history, was located at Rushey Green and served the community diligently. The widespread adoption of motorized fire engines by the LFB in the early 20th century led to a reduction in the number of fire stations required. Consequently, Rushey Green fire station was deemed too small and surplus to requirements. Despite its closure, the Victorian-era building continues to stand proudly, a testament to the city's rich firefighting heritage. The structure on the roof of the building is a row of pulleys and ropes, which were used to pull hoses up to dry after use at fires. This innovative system ensured that firefighters always had access to dry hoses, ready for the next emergency call. The Rushey Green fire station, with its red brick facade and distinctive roofline, is a reminder of the past and the evolution of firefighting in London. Today, it stands as a valuable piece of history, waiting to be preserved and cherished for future generations.
