Joffre at the Marne: A Moment of Triumph in French Military History This striking relief plaque captures the iconic moment when Marshal Joseph Joffre, the French commander-in-chief during World War I, exhorted his troops to advance at the Battle of the Marne in September 1914. The image of Joffre, with his hand extended and index finger pointing forward, accompanied by the exclamation "Et maintenant en avant!" (And now, forward!), became a symbol of French determination and resilience during the early stages of the war. The plaque was created by the French sculptor and engraver Louis Octave Mattei, born around 1880. Mattei studied under the renowned sculptor Alfred-Auguste Tonnelier and exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Français. His expertise in sculpture and engraving led him to create numerous medals commemorating significant events in French military history, including the Battle of the Marne.
