EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century print showcases a breathtaking view of the Monument to the Great Fire of London and the Church of St Magnus the Martyr. The Monument, a 202-foot tall Doric column, was built as a memorial to the Great Fire of London that ravaged the city in 1666. The fire, which began in a bakery on Pudding Lane, destroyed over 13,000 houses and left hundreds of thousands of Londoners homeless. In the background of the print, the Church of St Magnus the Martyr can be seen. The original church, which dated back to the 11th century, was also destroyed during the Great Fire. However, under the guidance of Sir Christopher Wren, one of England's most renowned architects, the church was rebuilt and reopened in 1676. The new church, with its distinctive Baroque design, stands proudly among the city's rebuilt structures. The print offers a glimpse into London's rich history, showcasing the resilience and determination of its people in the face of adversity. The Monument and the Church of St Magnus the Martyr stand as enduring symbols of the city's past, reminding us of the importance of preserving our history for future generations.
