Murraygate, Dundee - Celebration of the Jute Industry
Murraygate, Dundee - Celebration of the Jute Industry - this, along with its other major industries gave Dundee its epithet as the city of " jute, jam and journalism". Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fibre that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. During the British Raj in the 19th and early 20th centuries, much of the raw jute fibre of Bengal was carried off to the United Kingdom, where it was then processed in mills concentrated in Dundee. Date: circa 1907

EDITORS COMMENTS
Murraygate, Dundee - A Celebration of the Jute Industry: Circa 1907 This evocative photograph captures the bustling heart of Murraygate, Dundee during the golden age of the jute industry. The street is a vibrant tableau of activity, with bales and balls of jute fibers piled high on the cobblestones, their golden hue reflecting the sunlight. The jute industry was a major economic force in Dundee, contributing significantly to its reputation as the 'City of Jute, Jam and Journalism'. Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. During the British Raj in the 19th and early 20th centuries, much of the raw jute fibre of Bengal was transported to the United Kingdom, where it was then processed in mills concentrated in Dundee. The city's strategic location on the River Tay made it an ideal hub for the jute trade, with ships transporting the raw material from India and finished goods being exported around the world. The traders in Murraygate are seen here overseeing their wares, their faces etched with determination and pride. The hops and awnings above their shops provide much-needed shade from the sun, while the twine and other jute products are neatly displayed for sale. The scene is a testament to the hard work and enterprise of the people of Dundee, who transformed the humble jute fiber into a valuable commodity that fueled the city's growth and prosperity. In the background, the distinctive red-brick buildings of the jute mills loom large, a reminder of the industry that shaped the city's identity. The jute industry may have declined in the latter half of the 20th century, but its legacy lives on in the rich history and cultural heritage of Dundee. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a time when the city's streets were alive with the energy and industry of the jute trade.
