The Battle of Marignano, fought on September 13, 1515, near the town of Melegnano in Italy, was a decisive victory for King Francis I. It marked the end of the Italian Wars and secured his position as the dominant ruler in Italy. The battle took place near the Basilica of Monza, which can be seen in the background of the engraving.
