EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of Marignano in the Italian Wars of 1515. The image, created by Antonio Verico from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," captures the intense clash between King Francis I of France, represented by the rider at the center, and the Old Swiss Confederacy's formidable pikemen and artillery. King Francis I, dressed in a grand cape, breastplate, and wearing a crown on his head, leads his lancers into the fray. The archbishop, also present on the battlefield, can be seen in the background, holding a sceptre and wearing a mitre. The electors of the Holy Roman Empire, allied with the Old Swiss Confederacy, are shown in the distance, watching the battle unfold. The Battle of Marignano, fought on September 13, 1515, near the town of Melegnano in Italy, was a decisive victory for King Francis I. It marked the end of the Italian Wars and secured his position as the dominant ruler in Italy. The battle took place near the Basilica of Monza, which can be seen in the background of the engraving. The basilica, a significant religious and historical site, is still standing today and is a popular tourist destination. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration provides a glimpse into the fashion and military tactics of the time, as well as the historical significance of the Battle of Marignano. The use of handcolouring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a valuable historical document and an impressive work of art.
