EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Andrea Freschi after Antoine Cardon, depicts a scene of Chinese men engaged in the ancient art of wild duck hunting during the Qing Dynasty. The image, taken from the comprehensive work "China, Its Costumes, Arts, Manufactures, etc." published by Henri-Leonard Jean Baptiste Bertin and Jean Baptiste Joseph Breton in London in 1824, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of China. The hunters, dressed in traditional Chinese attire, are shown wading in the clear, shallow waters of a river, their faces focused intently on the task at hand. Each man holds a long, slender pole in one hand, attached to which is a large, hollow gourd hat. The gourds, ingeniously crafted as decoys, are filled with rice or other grains to attract the ducks. The hunters' other hand holds a net, ready to capture the unsuspecting birds as they approach the decoys. The serene river setting is dotted with lush vegetation and tall reeds, providing the perfect camouflage for the hunters. The men work in unison, their movements synchronized to maximize their chances of success. The intricate details of their clothing, from the intricate patterns on their robes to the delicate embroidery on their hats, add to the authenticity of the scene. This enchanting image offers a window into the past, showcasing the traditional hunting techniques and the natural beauty of China during the Qing Dynasty. The artistry of the handcoloured copperplate engraving brings the scene to life, transporting us back in time to witness this fascinating moment in history.
