EDITORS COMMENTS
Cunard Liner RMS Aquitania Arriving into New York, USA (circa 1914) The majestic Cunard Liner RMS Aquitania graces the waters of New York Harbor, marking the end of a transatlantic voyage that began in Europe. Launched on April 21, 1913, and making her maiden voyage to New York on May 30, 1914, the Aquitania was a testament to the grandeur of ocean travel in the early 20th century. With a length of 780 feet and a beam of 92 feet, the Aquitania was a sight to behold as she approached the shores of the United States. Her distinctive funnels, adorned with the Cunard Line's iconic black and red stripes, stood tall against the sky, while her elegant lines and sleek silhouette spoke to the sophistication and luxury of the era. The Aquitania was in service for an impressive 36 years, during which time she steamed an astonishing 3 million miles in 450 voyages. She played a significant role in both World Wars, serving as a troopship and a hospital ship before being returned to her original purpose as a passenger liner. As the Aquitania slipped gracefully into the harbor, the towering skyscrapers of New York City provided a striking backdrop. The paddlesteamers and ferries that dotted the water seemed almost quaint in comparison to the huge, beautiful ship that had sailed across the Atlantic. The scene was one of history in the making, a moment frozen in time that spoke to the romance and adventure of ocean travel in the early 1900s.
