EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts the Duke of Aquitaine, Duc d'Aquitaine, proudly displaying his standard during the 15th century. The Duke is shown in full regalia, wearing a suit of armor adorned with the distinctive fleurs-de-lis symbol of the French monarchy. Atop his helmet, the Duke wears the distinctive white and gold cap of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious and exclusive order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The Duke's standard, held aloft by an attendant, is a vibrant display of heraldic symbols. The blue background is charged with a golden fleece, the symbol of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and a golden lion rampant, the traditional emblem of Aquitaine. The border of the standard is decorated with intricate gold and blue designs, adding to the grandeur of the display. This image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The armorial is based on an illustrated manuscript, number 4790, housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. The meticulous attention to detail and rich colors of this chromolithograph make it a valuable historical record of heraldic design and the symbolism of the Duke of Aquitaine during the 15th century.
