EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the entrance to Mr. Holden's Family Vault in the historic St. Bride's churchyard, one of the few surviving relics after the devastating Fire of London in 1666. The vault was built in 1657 and features an ornate coat of arms above the door. The engraving is a meticulous reproduction by John Thomas Smith, based on original drawings by members of the Society of Antiquaries. The image showcases a grand figure standing guard at the entrance, representing Justice, while Fortitude and Prudence are depicted as statues on either side. The figure of Justice is depicted as a blindfolded woman holding a balance scale, symbolizing impartiality and fairness. The statues of Fortitude and Prudence are depicted as strong and wise figures, representing the virtues of endurance and careful planning, respectively. The gate is adorned with intricate carvings and the crest of the Mayor of London, Richard Wittington, is prominently displayed above the door. The copperplate engraving, produced by J.T. Smith in 1795, provides a fascinating glimpse into the history and architecture of London during this period. The print is a testament to the rich heritage of London's past and the importance of preserving historical records and artifacts.
