The illustration is based on an original drawing by Jane Loudon and was expertly reproduced by Henry Noel Humphreys for Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials, published in London in 1849 by William S. Orr. The Linum genus, which includes over 200 species, is native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The plants in this illustration include Clammy Flax (Linum hypericifolium), One-styled Flax (Linum monogynum), Blue-and-White Flax (Linum ascyrifolium), Siberian Flax (Linum sibiricum), Yellow Flax (Linum flavum), Alpine Flax (Linum alpinum), and Linum narbonense.
