This evocative image captures the moment during the Battle of Assaye, on 23 September 1803, when General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) fearlessly led his troops across the treacherous waters of the River Kaitna in western India. The Second Anglo-Maratha War (1803-1805) was a significant conflict between the Maratha Empire and the British East India Company, with Wellesley commanding the British forces. Amidst the chaos of battle, the general, astride his horse, leads the charge with unwavering determination, as his soldiers follow closely behind. The River Kaitna, a formidable obstacle, did not deter Wellesley and his men, who were determined to secure a decisive victory. The Maratha forces, decimated by the relentless British attack, were losing ground and morale. The scene is reminiscent of the 19th century's daring military exploits, with the general's officers and soldiers crossing the river on horseback, their horses splashing through the water. The image, taken from an engraving by James Grant, poignantly illustrates the risks and rewards of military leadership.
