EDITORS COMMENTS
In this mezzotint print, the prehistoric world comes to life as three legendary creatures engage in an epic battle. At the left, an Ichthyosaur and a Plesiosaur clash in the depths of the ocean, their powerful bodies glistening with moisture and determination. The Ichthyosaur, a reptile adapted to life in water with a fish-like body and flipper-like limbs, faces off against the Plesiosaur, a plesiosaurian marine reptile characterized by its long neck and four limbs. On the right side of the image, a group of Pterosaurs soar through the sky above, their wings spread wide against the backdrop of a fantastical heavenly landscape. These flying reptiles, with their membranous wings and reptilian bodies, represent some of the earliest vertebrates capable of true flight. The richly detailed background showcases a diverse array of vegetation, including the Ailanthus tree, Chinese Varnish Tree, Rhus, Toxicodendron, and Succedaneum, among others. The botanical elements are depicted in vibrant colors, adding an element of natural beauty to the scene. This magnificent artwork is a reproduction of a mezzotint by John Martin, taken from Thomas Hawkins' Book of the Great Sea-Dragons. It was first published in Paris in 1783, making it an exquisite example of the French botanical art and illustration of the time. The intricate details and hand-coloring on this copperplate engraving by Pierre Joseph Buchoz and Les Donys are truly a marvel to behold. This print offers a glimpse into the wondrous and diverse prehistoric world, where marine reptiles battled in the depths, and flying reptiles ruled the skies, surrounded by the lush vegetation of an ancient era.
