EDITORS COMMENTS
This ideal reconstruction print by Lodovico Pogliaghi depicts Michelangelo's tomb of Pope Julius II as it was intended to be seen in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. The monumental structure, which was left incomplete at Michelangelo's death in 1564, is shown here in its idealized form, towering over the figures of Michelangelo and Pope Julius II. Michelangelo began work on the tomb in 1505, but it was not until 1545 that Pope Julius II commissioned the architect Domenico Fontana to construct a crypt to house the tomb. However, the tomb was never completed according to Michelangelo's designs, with various artists and architects contributing to the project over the centuries. The print captures the awe-inspiring scale of the tomb, which was to be Michelangelo's final work. The sculptures and statues that adorn the monument are intricately detailed, with the figures of Michelangelo and Pope Julius II appearing small in comparison. The print also highlights the architectural elements of the tomb, with its intricate columns and ornate decoration. Lodovico Pogliaghi's reconstruction is an imaginative representation of Michelangelo's original vision for the tomb. The print provides a glimpse into the grandeur and magnificence of the tomb, which continues to be a source of inspiration and wonder for visitors to St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
