EDITORS COMMENTS

The image, taken in the late Victorian era, showcases a group of eleven cricketers dressed in their formal cricket attire, exuding confidence and camaraderie. Lord Sheffield, whose real name was Frederick Charles Robinson, 5th Marquess of Tavistock, was an English aristocrat who had a deep passion for cricket. He had been appointed as the captain of the Australian team for this tour, marking a significant moment in the history of Australian cricket. The team members, all wearing straw boaters and boaters, stand in two rows, with Lord Sheffield positioned centrally, proudly holding a cricket bat. The players on the back row are identified as: J.A. Spofforth, J.T. Sinclair, C.B. Fry, and J.C. Bannerman. The front row consists of: R.B. Codrington, J.H.T. Douglas, F.S. Jackson, A.N. Bardwell, and W.G. Grace. Grace, considered one of the greatest cricketers of all time, is particularly noteworthy for his inclusion in this team. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of cricket during the late 1800s, providing a unique insight into the lives of these talented athletes and their commitment to the sport they loved.
