EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment when Father Jacques Marquette, a French Jesuit missionary, and his companions embarked on a small sailboat to explore the vast expanse of the American rivers in 1673. Marquette, dressed in his religious attire, sits at the stern of the boat, deep in thought as he gazes out at the unfamiliar landscape. His three companions, all dressed in fur clothing, row the boat with determination, their eyes focused on the task at hand. The year was 1673, and Marquette, accompanied by Louis Jolliet, a French explorer, and two Native American guides, set out on a mission to explore the Mississippi River and its tributaries. This journey marked the first European exploration of the vast waterway that would later become a vital artery for trade and transportation in the New World. Marquette's expedition was significant for several reasons. Not only did it expand European knowledge of the American continent, but it also provided an opportunity for the Jesuit missionaries to establish a presence among the Native American tribes. Marquette's journeys would ultimately lead to the founding of several missions in the region, including the city of St. Louis, Missouri. This photograph, taken from an original print from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was still being discovered, and the spirit of exploration and adventure was at its height. The image captures the sense of wonder and curiosity that drove men like Marquette to venture into the unknown, and serves as a reminder of the rich history that lies at the heart of the American story.
