EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving captures the grandeur and opulence of the marriage ceremony between Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais at Notre Dame in Paris, France, in 1804. The image, created by renowned English satirist and illustrator George Cruikshank for Doctor Syntax's Hudibrastic Poem, offers a unique perspective on this historic event. Napoleon, dressed in his imperial robes and adorned with the insignia of his new title as Emperor of the French, stands confidently at the altar, his hand resting on a golden scepter. Josephine, resplendent in a flowing white gown and veil, gazes up at him with a look of love and devotion. The couple's union was a significant moment in European history, marking the beginning of Napoleon's reign as one of the most powerful leaders of the time. The scene is filled with intricate details, including the ornate decorations of the cathedral, the attentive priest, and the curious onlookers in the background. One boy in the crowd holds a cushion, perhaps in anticipation of the newlyweds' departure. The handcoloured details add depth and vibrancy to the engraving, making it a stunning work of art in its own right. Despite the grandeur of the scene, there is a hint of caricature in Cruikshank's depiction, with the exaggerated expressions and postures of some of the onlookers suggesting a satirical take on the event. However, the overall effect is one of celebration and wonder, capturing the excitement and significance of Napoleon and Josephine's marriage at Notre Dame in 1804.
