EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, titled "Natice, Nautile," showcases an intriguing underwater gathering of various intriguing mollusks, including Moon snails and Nautilus species. In the foreground, a Bladder moon snail (Neverita didyma 1) is depicted, its translucent, rounded shell adorned with delicate, wavy lines and a small, dark spot at the apex. The Moon snail's elongated, curved proboscis extends from its right side, ready to explore its surroundings. To the left, a Crusty nautilus (Nonion umbilicatulum 2) is shown, its shell covered in tiny, white, calcareous nodules, giving it a textured, crusty appearance. The Nautilus's eight arms, each tipped with a small, sensory tentacle, can be seen emerging from the shell's opening. The centerpiece of this enchanting illustration is a pair of Chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius 3, 4), their iconic, spiral-shaped shells spiraling upwards, displaying the intricate, alternating bands of light and dark colors. Their long, slender siphons, used for breathing and feeding, extend from the uppermost chambers of their shells. This stunning work of art was created by the skilled hands of Adolph Fries and masterfully engraved by du Casse, as part of Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors bring these fascinating marine creatures to life, offering a glimpse into the wonders of the deep sea.
