This hand-colored steel engraving depicts the vibrant Orange-breasted Bushshrike, Chlorophoneus sulfureopectus, also known as the Sulphur-breasted Bushshrike or Orange-breasted Helmetshrike. The image is taken from William John Swainson's "Birds of Western Africa," published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ornithology, in Edinburgh in 1837. Swainson's meticulous illustration was later transformed into this stunning engraving by William Lizars. The Orange-breasted Bushshrike is a medium-sized bird with distinctive plumage. The male is adorned with an orange-yellow breast, white underparts, and a white crest on its head. Its back and wings are a deep glossy green, with black wings edged in white. The female, on the other hand, has a more subdued appearance, with a brownish-orange breast and a brown crest. This bird is native to the forests and woodlands of West and Central Africa. It is a member of the Malaconotidae family, which also includes the Prionopidae or helmetshrikes and the Lanidae or shrikes. The Orange-breasted Bushshrike is an omnivorous bird, feeding on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates.
