EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph, published in The Bystander magazine in 1936, captures the carefree childhood moments of four future aristocratic heirs: David Greville, Lord Brooke (later the 8th Earl of Warwick, famously selling Warwick Castle to Madame Tussauds), Caroline Cust, daughter of the 6th Baron Brownlow, Brian Butler, the future 9th Earl of Carrick, and Alexander Thynne, who would later become the eccentric 7th Marquess of Bath, Lord Bath of Weymouth. The image beautifully encapsulates the upper-class upbringing of these young royals during the 1930s. Lord Brooke, dressed in a smart blazer and holding a cricket bat, stands confidently with his siblings. Caroline Cust, in a floral dress and holding a book, exudes a sense of intelligence and charm. Brian Butler, wearing a sweater and shorts, looks thoughtful, while Alexander Thynne, in a striped shirt and shorts, displays an impish grin. The children's aristocratic lineage is evident in their refined attire and elegant demeanor. Yet, despite their privileged backgrounds, they appear to be enjoying a simple, joyful moment in their childhood. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these future leaders and highlights the enduring allure of aristocratic heritage.
