EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving from the 19th century, we witness an intriguing encounter between Scottish traveller John o' Arnha and a witch. John, a sturdy figure with a cudgel in hand, stands tall and resolute as a witch, flying on a broomstick, appears before him. The witch, with her legs extended and a horn atop her head, seems to be in the midst of taking flight. Her body, adorned with odd joints and a crocodile-like tail, exudes an otherworldly aura. The scene unfolds with the witch, whose size is immense, rising from the banks of a river. Her wizened face, etched with age and cunning, is contorted in a sneer as she prepares to cast a spell. John, undeterred, braces himself for the impending confrontation. This encounter between the traveller and the witch is reminiscent of Scottish folklore and the many tall tales that have been passed down through generations. The image, created by George Beattie in Montrose, Scotland, in 1826, is a testament to the richness and depth of Scottish mythology. It is a fascinating blend of fact and fiction, reality and the supernatural, and the occult and the caricatured. The intricate details of the engraving, from the textures of the traveller's clothes to the folds of the witch's robe, add to the overall mystique of the scene. This print invites us to explore the depths of Scottish folklore and the many strange and wonderful tales that lie within.
