EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by the skilled hands of Richard Polydore Nodder, depicts the Shark Sucker Fish, scientifically known as Remora remora, also referred to as the Fork-tailed Remora or Echeneis remora. The image is taken from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's esteemed publication, "The Naturalist's Miscellany," published in London in 1801. The Shark Sucker Fish is a unique and fascinating marine creature, renowned for its ability to attach itself to the bodies of larger animals, such as sharks, using its disc-like sucking disc located at the end of its rostrum. This symbiotic relationship benefits both the Shark Sucker Fish and the host shark, as the former feeds on parasites and dead skin cells of the latter. The intricate details of the Shark Sucker Fish's anatomy are beautifully captured in this illustration. Its elongated, torpedo-shaped body is adorned with a series of dorsal and pectoral fins, while its caudal fin is forked, giving it its alternative name, Fork-tailed Remora. The fish's small, beady eyes and large, gaping mouth are also clearly visible, revealing its sharp, needle-like teeth. The artistry of this engraving is further highlighted by the vibrant, hand-colored hues that bring the Shark Sucker Fish to life. The rich, detailed illustration not only showcases the natural beauty of this intriguing creature but also serves as an important contribution to the fields of zoology, natural history, and ichthyology.
