EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck in 1889, showcases a young German man from the late 15th century proudly displaying his shield and weapons. The central focus of the image is the shield, bearing the coat of arms of Deggendorf, a Bavarian town located in southeastern Germany. The shield is a mi-parti design, divided into two halves, with the upper portion displaying a black background adorned with a white cross and the lower half showcasing a black eagle on a golden background. The man wears a tunic and hose, both in black, with intricate white embroidery adorning the neckline and cuffs. A red cape is draped over his shoulders, fastened with a black ribbon and a badge displaying the Order of the Holy Spirit. In his right hand, he holds a pole axe, known as a Steitart, which was a popular weapon during this period. Its long shaft and sharp axe head made it an effective tool for both offense and defense. In his left hand, he wields a halberd, or Helmbarte, a versatile weapon featuring a long shaft, a sharp axe head, and a hook or spike at the other end. These weapons were essential for close combat and were commonly used by infantry soldiers during the late Middle Ages. The meticulous attention to detail in this illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and weaponry of the time, offering valuable insights into the daily life and military practices of the era.
