EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph from Lorenz Oken's Universal Natural History, published in Stuttgart in 1841, showcases an impressive array of snake species. The marine environment is represented by the Marine File Snake (Chersydrus granulatus) and the Pelagic Sea Snake (Pelamys bicolor), both adapted to life at sea. The Lake Taal Snake (Hydrophis cyanocinctus) is depicted near the water's edge, named after the volcanic Lake Taal in the Philippines. Among the terrestrial species, the Wart Snake (Acrochordus javanicus) and the Javelin Sand Boa (Eryx jaculus) are shown. The Wart Snake, native to Southeast Asia, has distinctive warts on its body, while the Javelin Sand Boa, found in the Middle East and Africa, is named for its javelin-like head. The Tentacle Snake (Erpeton tentaculatus) is another intriguing species, with two long, tentacle-like appendages extending from its head, which it uses for sensing prey. The Crowned False Boa (Pseudoboa coronata) and the Indian Python (Python molurus) are also featured, with their distinctive color patterns and impressive size. This beautiful and detailed illustration provides a glimpse into the diverse world of snake species, showcasing their unique adaptations and intriguing appearances. It serves as a reminder of the rich natural history that continues to inspire and captivate us.
