EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving, created by Fournier after an original illustration by Blanchard for the Universal Dictionary of Natural History by Charles d'Orbigny, published in Paris in 1849, showcases a charming assembly of four distinct bee species. The central figure is the Dahlbomii Bumblebee (Bombus dahlbomii), with its distinctive yellow and black stripes and plump body. To its left, the Acanthopus Palmatus, also known as the Splendid Long-horned Bee (Acanthopus splendidus), can be seen. This bee boasts an elongated abdomen and striking orange and black markings. Adjacent to the Acanthopus Palmatus is the Xylocopa Flavorufa, or the Red-belled Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa flavorufa). This large, robust bee is easily identified by its bright red abdomen and metallic green thorax. The final bee in this composition is the Cuckoo Bee, Melecta Punctata. This bee is a cuckoo species, meaning it lays its eggs in the nests of other bees. Melecta Punctata is characterized by its slender body and yellow and black stripes. This engraving is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustrations. It offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of bee species, showcasing their unique features and beauty. The Universal Dictionary of Natural History, under the direction of Charles d'Orbigny, aimed to document and preserve the natural world, making this engraving an invaluable resource for both scientific and artistic pursuits.
