This photograph captures the newly opened Thames Tunnel in London, linking the districts of Wapping and Rotherhithe, circa 1840s. The Thames Tunnel, a marvel of 19th-century engineering, was the world's first underwater tunnel for road traffic and the first major project to use a cast-iron segmental tunnel design. The image showcases the interior of the tunnel, with people walking along the narrow footway, their shadows cast long and dark against the damp, brick walls. The tunnel's low ceiling is just inches above their heads, and the dim light from the gas lamps illuminates the way forward.
