This print showcases two exquisite works by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist Pieter Withoos: "White dodo I" (1856) and "White dodo II" (1863). Both depictions feature female White Dodos, an extinct bird species native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Withoos' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate plumage and lifelike expressions of these birds. In "White dodo I," the dodo is shown in a serene setting, perched on a mossy branch against a backdrop of lush greenery. The dodo's distinctive white feathers, large red eyes, and curved beak are rendered with remarkable precision. In "White dodo II," the dodo is depicted in a more active pose, standing on a rocky outcrop with its wings slightly spread. This image, published in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London, provides a closer look at the dodo's intricate feather patterns and textures. These prints were created during a time when European naturalists were actively studying and documenting the natural wonders of the world, including the recently discovered dodo.
