EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the year 1901, showcases the stunning Piazza del Duomo, or Town Square, in the beautiful Italian town of Pistoia, located in the heart of Tuscany. At the center of the square stands the impressive Palazzo del Comune, or Municipal Palace, which serves as the historic seat of local government. The Palazzo del Comune, with its elegant facade adorned with intricate stonework and tall arched windows, exudes an air of grandeur and historical significance. The building's architectural style is a blend of various influences, with elements of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture evident in its design. Surrounding the palace are various other structures, including the majestic Duomo di San Zeno, a Romanesque-style cathedral, and the Loggia del Capitaniato, a beautiful loggia or open-air gallery, which adds to the picturesque charm of the town square. The statue of the Madonna della Cintola, or Our Lady of the Belt, can be seen in the foreground of the photograph. According to local legend, the statue was carried in procession from Lucca to Pistoia in 1435 to protect the town from an impending invasion. The statue is now a cherished symbol of Pistoia and a popular pilgrimage site for locals and tourists alike. This photograph, taken over a century ago, provides a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of Pistoia and Tuscany, making it a must-see destination for anyone with an appreciation for European history and architecture.
