EDITORS COMMENTS
Caple ne Ferne, a Grade II listed building located at 2 Albany Road in the seaside town of St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, is seen here from Pevensey Road. Originally built in 1879 for Major Robert Tubbs, a retired army officer, and his French-born wife Fanny, the large detached house with servant quarters was designed by local architects Jeffery & Skiller in an eclectic style that reflects both English and northern French architectural influences. The name Caple ne Ferne is believed to have derived from old Norman French, meaning "Chapel in the Woods." The building served as a convalescent home for employees of the London Transport Central Road Services (CRS) from 1923 until the mid-20th century. The CRS, an omnibus company, provided bus services for London and its suburbs. The employees' friendly society operated the Caple ne Ferne convalescent home to offer respite and recovery for those in need. This photograph, taken in 1923, captures the beauty and charm of Caple ne Ferne as it stood over a century ago. The eclectic architectural design, with its mix of styles and influences, is evident in the intricate details of the building's facade. The tranquil setting, surrounded by trees and greenery, adds to the serene atmosphere, making it an ideal place for convalescence and relaxation. Today, Caple ne Ferne remains a cherished piece of local history, standing as a testament to the rich architectural heritage of St Leonards-on-Sea and the importance of community support for employees during times of need.
