This exquisite Dore print depicts Siddhartha Gautama, the historical figure who became known as Buddha, or the Enlightened One. Born in Lumbini, Nepal around 563 BC, Siddhartha grew up in luxury as a prince of the Shakya clan. However, after encountering the realities of suffering and old age, he renounced his royal life and embarked on a quest for enlightenment. Siddhartha's journey led him to sit under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India, where he achieved enlightenment and became the Buddha. He spent the rest of his life teaching the Dharma, or the path to enlightenment, to his followers. Buddhism, which originated from the teachings of Buddha, emphasizes the principles of suffering, impermanence, and non-self. It is a major world religion with over 520 million followers worldwide. The image of Buddha depicted in this print is that of him in meditation, with a serene expression on his face and a calm posture.
