This intriguing photograph captures two fragments of an ancient charter, dating back to the year 1440. The parchment pieces, which have been repurposed as binding material for a book, once recorded a mortgage for a house. The text, written in a dark brown-black ink in a beautiful gothic cursive hand, is mostly present when the fragments are laid side by side. However, the edges of the second piece have been roughly cut, and some sections from the top two lines are missing.
