EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the iconic spire of St. Matthew's Church in Denmark Hill, London, designed by architect Alexander Gough. The church was consecrated in 1848, but it wasn't until 1858 that the tower and spire were completed. Tragically, on September 26th, 1940, during a bombing raid in World War II, the church was largely destroyed.
Despite the devastation, the tower and spire stood tall for several years before making way for the construction of King's College Dental Institute on the site. This image from circa 1910s showcases the grandeur and beauty of this historic landmark before its destruction.
The distinctive silhouette of St. Matthew's spire against the backdrop of Denmark Hill is a reminder of both past glory and resilience in times of adversity. The architectural details captured in this photograph are a testament to Gough's skill and vision.
As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but marvel at the history etched into every brick and stone of St. Matthew's Church - a symbol of strength rising above even the darkest moments in our shared human story.
