EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the triumphant return of General Sir Redvers Buller and his wife, Lady Audrey Buller, to Aldershot in November 1900 following his successful command of British Forces during the early months of the Second Boer War in South Africa. The streets of Aldershot were transformed into a festive scene as the townsfolk and soldiers from the garrison lined the streets to welcome the victorious general home. General Buller, who served as Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in South Africa from October 1899 to May 1900, led the army in Natal until his return to England. Dressed in full military regalia, General Buller is seen here driving through the decorated streets in an open horse-drawn carriage, with Lady Audrey seated beside him. The soldiers, standing at attention and lining the streets, add to the sense of celebration and triumph. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the Victorian era's military traditions and the public's enthusiasm for their heroes. General Sir Redvers Buller (December 1839 – June 1908) was a renowned British Army officer who played a significant role in the Commonwealth's military history.
